I learned that if you want to make it bad enough, no matter how bad it is, you can make it. -Gale SayersAs the National Inter-school Hockey tournament is approaching, how are you feeling?
Do you feel good about the way you are playing, the way you are moving as a team?
Are you at your fittest? Are you at your most confident?
We have spent many months training and preparing you as a team, as a player
- there should be no stopping you from achieving your goal, your dream.
Is this going to be THE DREAM TEAM that will make a difference this year?
(after the many years of silver and bronze...)
How badly do you want to be THE TEAM that will make a difference?
Is it possible?

Lady
How have you, in your own way, been living up to the Theresian Hockey vision?
I have heard good stuff about the B division ladies lately, how you have matured as a team and player this year.
It made Ms Martens smile when she looked at the team.
It made us (hockey teachers) smile, when we heard the compliments.
keep it up.

Passion gives your life direction and drive. It enables you to derive enjoyment and happiness from what you do.A passion is not necessarily what you are good at;it is what makes you look forward to each new day.As with all matters of the heart, you will know when you find it.And, like any great relationship, it will get better and better as the years roll on.

The will to win is important, but the will to prepare is vital. -Joe Paterno
As we are nearing the national schools competition in Feb, it is time to fine tune your preparation. What are your strengths and weaknesses? Having you been improving on your strengths and correcting your weaknesses? Have you been practicing with your teammates who work closely with you on the field? Have you been working on your 'mind of steel'? Hope you have started to focus on preparing yourself for the challenges ahead.
How badly do you wish to achieve your team goal?
God bless.

As what Mr Danker has amptly put it, it is not a matter of winning or losing...
It is
HOW you won the game....and
HOW you lost it, that is essential.
Don't lose heart.
Set your goals high, and don't stop till you get there.Keep it going.

The way a team plays as a whole determines its success. You may have the greatest bunch of individual stars in the world, but if they don't play together, the team wont be worth a dime. -Babe ruth (Famous American baseball player, most celebrated athlete of his time)

Above is a the list of sec 1 girls who have been selected from the hockey trials today. I believe many of you have some idea of who should be included in the team from the list above. I need to narrow down the number from 31 to about only 22-24 players (max). Mr Danker and myself can't possibly remember all the players by their name. It would definitely help if you could email me the names of players (mentioned above) whom you think deserve (agility, speed, skill...not looks ah!!!!) to be a part of our hockey team. Your help will be much appreciated. I can be contacted at
nicolequektan@gmail.comi hope to hear from you by Wednesday (11th Jan) :)
i'd like to thank the ex-theresian players who have helped out with the trials.
keep it going.

B Division players :
CONGRATULATIONS!!! for doing us proud with your achievements at UWC tournament and your performance at Penang. The award presentation ceremony this morning came in timely today (our recruitment day for sec ones) as more younger players would emulate to have your kind of achievements one day - when they grow up??? :)
I was smiling to myself during the award presentation, am glad i am part of this team.
- Thank you for your time and effort in 2005, all these would not have been possible without your team commitment and effort. Congrats again!
Please take note that although it is stated on the schedule that Monday trainings are for C division players, you are welcome to join us on the pitch (practice short corner, penalty stroke, one on one etc.) in view of the upcoming National schools tournament in Feb. The more you practice, the better you will be! As i mentioned earlier in my letter, it's time for a change of colour ladies :) hmmm......yellow looks really good to me, how about you?
Hope to see you there.

Dear Theresians,
Welcome back from Penang! I heard of your outstanding performance at the games and I certainly hope to see more of that in Singapore! Hope your trip to Malaysia has helped to build your hockey skills, reading of the game, confidence and mental toughness. Such games are great exposure for you as you get to meet different kinds of opponents and allow you to work cohesively as a team. Through such experiences, you will eventually mature to become a better hockey player!
Your trip to Penang is part of our preparation for the Nationals inter-school Hockey tournament 2006. Let us not forget our goal for 2006 – which is to improve on the overall standing of CHIJ St Theresa’s Convent at the National Schools. In 2005, the school achieved a Bronze and a Silver medal….it’s time for a change of colour girls J !
In order to achieve our goal for 2006, we really need your full commitment to train and play as a team. We hope to see encouragement and motivation among the players, reminding each other of the importance of balancing work and play, positive discipline and attitude towards trainings, enthusiasm to improve individual skills and of course welcoming the newbie sec one hockey players into our Theresian family.
There are many ways of contributing to the team :
reminding each other of training times and checking why someone is absent
helping a weaker student with her work before/after training
positive encouragement/talk when you see someone doing something good
positive encouragement even when things are not going well
practicing either as a small group or individually on the hardcourt before morning assembly or during recess (ask teachers/coach for little drills if you are keen)
keep yourself physically fit by working on your stamina and diet
constantly keep out distractions and focus on trainings and games (refer to the mental skills handouts during workshop and Penang booklet) – be mentally prepared!
Ideally, the motivation to become a good hockey player should always come from within. Do not wait for the teacher/coach/ or captain to go after you to do any of the above. By now, you should have the self-discipline to do all/most of the above mentioned. I sincerely hope everyone has a clear idea of how to be a good contributing player in the team.
Enclosed with this email is the schedule for trainings and games for January 2006. Notice we have set aside Monday trainings for C division and Tues trainings for B division? The reason is that we hope to provide more quality training with more individual attention given to the players if the group is smaller. Nevertheless, the field is big enough to accommodate anyone who needs extra training or practice at the other end of the field (short corner, flicks, one on one…etc.) Hence, although it is stated that training is mainly for C division on Mondays and B division on Tuesdays, all players are welcome to use the field for their own practices, although it may not be their training day. The coach and teacher in charge will always be there on those days J
Before I sign off, I hope to remind everyone of our Theresian Hockey vision :
Every Theresian hockey
player is a
sportswoman,
who is a leader,
a learner
and a lady.
Thank you and God bless you.
Have a wonderful 2006!
Best regards,
Mrs Nicole Quek-Tan
